KCSE 2009 EXAMINISATIONS KICK START COUNTRYWIDE(nfdonline-gsa) SEE PICTURES BELOW
The much awaited Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations has kick started countrywide where over 300000 students are sitting for the exam.

A significant percentage of the students in north eastern province are from nomadic background whose livelihood is mainly from livestock which was affected by the severe drought that has hit the province over the past months.

The harsh climate conditions compounded by the credit crunch have led to the fall of livestock market and students could not get the disposable income to pay for private tuition during holidays. Despite this, students told nfdonline reporter that they are very optimistic about the exam.  More optimistic was the principal of Garissa High School Mr Harun Mohamed Yusuf who present us the following scores which are the projection for this years’ KCSE 2009 result for Garissa HighSchool (A 1, A- 4, B+ 18, B 24, B- 25, C+ 31, C 27, C- 6, D+ 4, D 0, D- 0, E, 0)

Garissa High School Principal Mr. Harun Mohamed Yussuf was the best performing principal in the region having won the coveted price of the " Principal of the Year " award in 2007  and 2008,  a recognition of his best performance by the Kenya Secondary School Heads Association KESSHA.

Mirroring the principals efforts, Garissa High School is one of the best performing schools in the region and has produces best students in academics; this has garnered the school a high status and good reputation.

The principal Mr. Harun told nfdonline, the school has a mission is to be the “centre of excellence” while our vision is to be the most “admired school in the region recognized for its innovation, high performance and community support”

The free education for all which was introduced by Kibaki administration is indeed is benefiting students as the Mr Harun confirmed to us “no fees, no admission was abolished, all students are required to report school on Sunday evening preceding opening days with or without fees”.

The principal who in the past studied at this school said “the school has a strategic plan and mechanism in place to achieve its goals, for instance the admission criteria. Form one entry the minimum score for a student to be admitted is 300 marks in KCPE”

The principal continued “to secure admission for their children parents flock well in advance , they says the Garissa High is the national school in the region”    

Mr Harun who is known for his discipline and track record was transferred as principal to Wajir High School 2001at a time when the school was under performing. During his tenure at in Wajir High (2001 – 2007) results improved notably from a poor mean score of 2.63 (D- ) in 2001  to 8.0 (B+) in 2007.

While sending an appeal to old students of GSS those in the diaspora and as well as the well-wishers the principal said “land grapping is the main challenge the school is experiencing and the school needs to be fenced”.
